Christmas in Munich – the most magical time of the year
Christmas – when the streets are glistening with fairy lights and the air is smelling of roasted almonds, cotton candy and mulled wine. We made our way through Munich on the lookout for the best Christmas markets in Munich. These were our favorite festive spots!
Pink Christmas
To start off our list of Christmassy places in Munich we just had to step of our agency door to discover the Pink Christmas market. It’s probably not what you would expect from an advent get-together with family and friends. Instead of ringing bells and christmas carols we got surprised by electronic music such as chillout and house sounding throughout the market and show programs. But why did the whole market shine in bright pink colors? Primarily in honor of the homosexual community who invented it, but also to make Christmas in Munich even more special. In the end we really felt love all around us.
From Rindermarkt to Marienplatz
Before we entered the big Christmas Market on Marienplatz, we just had to stop at the Rindermarkt. As one of the smallest markets in Munich it was the perfect place to avoid big crowds of people and to spend some quality time with our loved ones. Just 150 meters further we reached our next destination: Marienplatz which couldn’t be more contrasting to the small market we’ve been to just two minutes ago. The biggest and oldest Christmas market offers everything everyone needs to get into Christmas mood: music, arts, crafts, mulled wine and culinary specialties. If we weren`t feeling super festive already we would have completely fallen for Christmas right there and then in the heart of Munich.
Mittelaltermarkt/Adventsspektakel
Wouldn’t it be boring to visit all the Christmas Markets without any time travel? Sure, that’s what we thought, too. So we decided to walk over to the Mittelaltermarkt (medieval market). By the way, medieval market isn’t the real name. Originally it was called advent spectacle. So don’t be surprised, when knights in armor cross your path or minstrels sing their songs about adventures. The music was definitely very special: The Mittelaltermarkt was the only market, where we could enjoy a cup of magical mulled wine while listening to medieval rock and folk. What we liked best? The program of music and shows on the weekends. Our trip there was an experience like no other – definitely stop by next year!
Christmas village at the residence
Our next Christmas market outing was probably the coziest. Not because of the markets size, more the location. Located in the middle of the residence we could really feel the former nobles living there. As if that weren’t enough for a truly special atmosphere the omnipresent lights painted the courtyard into a magic world of endless colors. A special attraction for kids is the fairytale forest. Different puppets tell wonderful Christmas stories – we would lie if we said this wasn’t our favorite part of the evening as well.
Viktualienmarkt
Last but not least on our list of our favorite Christmas spots in Munich is the Christmas market at Viktualienmarkt. Many different huts with drinks, snacks and hand-crafted art invited us for wander around. Luckily we arrived at the right time and could enjoy musicians spreading the Christmas Joy. We absolutely loved it!
After visiting Christmas hot spots all over Munich we feel rather festive and joyful, ready for the big festivities next week. Hopefully you all had a wonderful lead up to the holidays – we would love to know your favorite christmassy spots in town so we can try them out next year!
