Bavarian cuisine never gets old
By mixing the classic Bavarian cuisine with modern culinary trends, three siblings out of Munich created a contemporary version of the good old Bavarian tavern: welcome to Xaver’s – the new restaurant in the heart of Munich
Since one month and a half the corner between Zwingerstraße and Rumfordstraße in the old city center is more crowded than ever with people enjoying freshly drawn beer. The reason: Xaver, Theresa and Jakob Portenlänger, three siblings with origins in the gastronomy (their parents run the well-known Bio-Hotel Alter Wirt in Grünwald), opened the new restaurant named Xaver’s, after the name of the youngest sibling.
Now, in 2018, they wanted to start their own restaurant and Xaver’s was born
The restaurant looks like a typical but modern Bavarian tavern, with wooden furnishings and walls as green as the Bavarian forest. Of course, also a Stammtisch is not missing (a special table, mostly located close to the bar, for guests who come really often), which is a have-to-have in a Bavarian tavern. In summer, the big terrace offers plenty of space between the beautiful facades of older Munich.

Down-to-earth but innovative
The dishes at Xaver’s are a perfect mixture between old classics and new inventions. Besides Schweinsbraten with sourcrout and Kaiserschmarrn, the three put some modern aspects into their menu. The poched cod or the saibling-ceviche on grilled asparagus will blow your mind and make you think different about old “dusty” Bavarian cuisine. For desert they took the famous mousse au chocolat from Alter Wirt in Grünwald with them and put it also on their menu.
Xaver, Theresa and Jakob are paying a lot of attention to the fairness and the regional origin of their food. The take the bread from BrotZeit, a manufacture at Grünwald and their vegetable from the organic farmer Mogli at Moosinning. Enjoy your meal and Prost!
